​Portia has worked in the field of arts education for over 20 years. Her experience has been as a dance instructor/choreographer and administratively in leadership roles with New York State Council on the Arts, Kentucky Performing Arts, Louisville Ballet and Louisville Metro Parks. In the early 2000s, she served on the Kentucky Arts Council's Peer Advisory Network and the Diversity Committee. In 2017, Portia relaunched Genesis Arts which was founded in 1984 by her late Mother, Dolores White. Genesis Arts provides dance instruction to preschool to high school age youth at no cost. Genesis Arts Senior Enrichment Center provides older adults with arts programming that enhances cognitive function and overall physical health by participating in hands-on arts activities and programs related to health and wellness. Portia has trained with the Alvin Ailey School, Eleo Pomare and Forces of Nature Dance Companies. Her dance training began in her hometown of Louisville, with Jewel K. McNair, Courtney School of Dance and Louisville Ballet where she performed in the Civic Company for three seasons. Portia's passion is to share with students of every age all of the wonderful things that the arts can do - educate, inspire, motivate and boost self-esteem.
